Afghan government passes a law that allows men to starve their wives if sexual demands are not met

In April of this year the Afghan government promised to review a new law that imposes severe restrictions on women in. It turns out that the government broke it's promise and a revised version of the Shiite Personal Status Law had been into effect at the end of July. Now Shiite men have the legal right to starve their wives if their sexual demands are not met.
Some Shiite women actually are in favor of this law
According to the New York Times, when the law was first approved President Obama called the law "abhorrent". Obama has yet to respond to the revised law, however it is suspected that this is because the Afghanistan election will take place soon.
It is frightening to me that some Shiite women actually feel it is important to maintain this law. It is an example of how deeply rooted the patriarchy in their country runs. I imagine it is an example of how deeply their fear runs as well.
I am proud of the women who have stood up for themselves especially as it is so dangerous for them to do so. My thoughts and prayers are definitely with them.
I believe story telling is an art form and blogging is a medium in which to share stories and ideas. Within this blog I hope to cover a spectrum of topics. From the serious to the silly. Here you will read my views and inquiries about subjects such as feminism, other various socio-political issues, psychology, spirituality, sexuality, and general interests such as film, art and music. You will also be exposed to my obsession with cupcakes, tea, books, Hello Kitty, and quirky day to day journeys. I enjoy learning from others as I am constantly attempting to introspect, grow and evolve. During this process I will be jotting down musings on this blog. Pull up a comfy chair and a spot of tea and join me!
