Rodney King with Dr. Drew on the MTV show Sober Living which aired in 2008
Most of us know Rodney King as the man who was unfairly beaten by Los Angeles police officers in 1992. The event triggered race riots across the city.
King has announced he will enter a boxing match against Philadelphia police officer in a celebrity boxing match in Philadelphia. My initial reaction ended up in slacked jaw as I'm sure it has with most people.
“I take this very seriously,” King stated in a press release. “Never felt better - physically and in the mind.”
“I know some people will see the irony here .... But I would have fought anyone who was worthy.”
King recently completed a stint with VH1's Sober Living as well as Celebrity Rehab with Dr Drew. The reality show gave us a peek at very calm and sweet personality of Rodney King. At one point King drove out with addiction specialist Dr. Drew Pinksy to the site where he was beaten so many years ago. Out loud he said that he has forgiven the police officers. He left a bible as a symbol of his forgiveness.
The man King will be fighting is former police officer Simon Aouad. Aouad was arrested in 2006 and charged with drug possession.
As of late King has been working construction and writing his autobiography. Congratulations to King who to date has been sober for 14 months.
King says he'll donate part of the proceeds from the pay-per-view sales of the fight to the Boys & Girls Clubs of America.
I'm not quite sure why King is doing this and I am not quite sure what is positive about he decision either.
