The Professionals

Today while at work I really felt a queasiness. This isn't the first time I have felt this way. I often feel uncomfortable when I really pause and look at the men and women that surround me dressed in casual business attire.

Often when I happen to be out for lunch during a work day I will watch the traffic of men and women that must dress in more "professional" business attire than I. The whole suit and tie and business skirt dress style really makes me nauseous. This seem a bit extreme? Perhaps. But really, it reeks of conformity.

"Casual Business Attire"

I remember struggling with this from teenhood on. In high school and during my college years I sported a variety of bright hair colors. Purple, red, blue, magenta and a variety of pinks. When I entered my first job at a Kinko's Copy store (awful job!) I was once approached by an assistant manager and scolded for my bright red hair. I remember she asked me if I thought my hair appeared "professional." I said no, but really...what is professional?

Eventually, I left that job and began working at a Borders book store where my hair wasn't a problem. And later when left to complete my junior and senior years of college in Olympia, Washington I was allowed to come back and work in the summers with my new magenta dreadlocks. However, I should note that I think the "alternative" look was somewhat of a gimmick at Borders as the company wanted to present itself as a "hip" store.

Regardless of their marketing tactics I don't think the business suffered due to the many employees who chose to wear bright hair, piercings or tattoos. And aren't those three things of the signifiers of "unprofessional"?

Later down the road I took on a job as a childcare counselor for at risk youth and after that I worked at a shelter for runaway teens. I knew that I had to conform and therefore cut off my dreadlocks.

A bit further down the road when I entered graduate school I noticed a young woman in my program who wore dreadlocks. I was surprised as I thought she would most likely have to cut them off in order to appear "professional" when our program began interning. I never met her personally but I noticed that she did cut her dreads off. I can only imagine why.

So, why is it that we have to wear "business clothes" at most work environments? And if such a concept is so important to the appearance of certain agencies, why is it acceptable for some to allow "casual fridays" where some employees are allowed to wear...gasp!...jeans!

When I get up in the morning and dress for work I am wearing items that I would never wear in my free time. I think a lot of us do this. Who am I dressing for? My co-workers? My supervisors? I suppose it's the agency and even the head haunchos have to wear business attire.

I can't help but feel that we are all putting on a falsehood. We are not being ourselves and I often think that these costumes present an "us vs. they" environment. The professionals vs. the client or in some cases customers or consumers. As a social worker I think I would not be harming anyone if I were to dress how I care to.

I plan on getting tattoos on my arms in the future and I know that I will have to begin wearing long sleeved shirts every single day. Doesn't that seem a bit odd and unfair?

The fact that we are presenting a false version of ourselves in our dress clothes (unless of course the individual truly enjoys wearing these clothes on a daily basis) is what depresses me. I feel that we are not authentic and we are not truly living.

On most days I can roll with the punches and just concentrate on work. But other days like today I just feel low. Call me too sensitive, call me whatever; but I think our society is screwed. The "alternative" look is viewed as unprofessional because many work environments refuse to put down biases and discrimination. The norm wins and therefore we march like ants to our respective jobs as "the professionals."

"Where The Wild Things Are" cupcakes

Anyone remember the book Where The Wild Things Are? Of course you do. I still have my copy from childhood and I have a small wild thing stuffed animal that I purchased in my teens.

For those of you who don't remember or are actually unfamiliar the 10 sentence book tells the story of young Max. One night Max is sent to his room without his supper as punishment for talking back. Max enters his room only to let his imagination take him on a wild adventure. He encounters mythical creatures or "the wild things".

Part of what makes Max so adorable..and freakin' awesome I might add is that he wears a distinctive cute white wolf suit.

Flicker user Clarissa Avila created these two amazing Wild Thing themed cupcakes.

Madonna booed for defending Gypsies

Madonna is currently on her "Sweet & Sticky Tour". Yeststerday the pop singer performed to an audience of 60,000 in Bucharest, Romania and was accompanied by Roma performers.

At one point Madonna spoke openly about her discomfort with widespread discrimination against Roma, or Gypsies. This became a turning point in the show as the crowd began to boo her.

According to Associated Press, some human rights advocates say Roma most likely suffer more endure more discrimination than any other group on the continent. Which human rights advocates were not specified in the AP article, nor were measures of this estimation provided.

There is a widespread distaste with Gypsies across Eastern Europe. Romanian Gypsies were slaves until the 19th century, and receive great bias to this day. While many East Europeans discriminate against Gypsies many enjoy Gypsy music and dance and consider it a regional part of their culture. Hmm..

So, although Madonna's audience enjoyed the Roma performers and embrace their style of music and dance, they refuse to acknowledge them as an acceptable group of people. Very sad indeed.

"We don't believe in discrimination ... we believe in freedom and equal rights for everyone", said Madonna. Madonna also mentioned disagreement with discrimination against homosexuals and was then again booed.

Damian Draghici, a Grammy Award-winner explained in an interview with AP that, "Romanians watch Gypsy soap operas, they like Gypsy music and go to Gypsy concerts but there has been a wave of aggression against Roma people in Italy, Hungary and Romania, which shows me something is not OK. The politicians have to do something about it. People have to be educated not to be prejudiced. All people are equal, and that is the message politicians must give."

Many Gypsies have migrated to Western Europe in search of better jobs and education. Many however do not have official identification, and therefore do not have access to certain social benefits. Many struggle to find adequate housing, health care and employment.

Many Europeans do not have sympathy or empathy for the Gypsies and consider them thieves who beg and steal.

Madonna evidently pays no attention to these biases and seems to have great affection for the gypsy culture. This isn't the first time Madonna has invited Gypsy musicians on tour.

In 2007 Madonna invited Gypsy punk band Gogol Bordello to perform with her.

When I first heard of this in 2007 I admit it appeared to be an odd collaboration. I do enjoy Gogol Bordello (and have a crush on the lead singer Eugene Hutz...hee!).

I am very glad that Madonna spoke up to discriminatory audiences despite their negative reactions. I hope she continues to speak up regardless of any bad press or pressures.

PETA goes too far...again

By Mary Altaffer, AP

In February of this year PETA (people for the ethical treatment of animals) staged a protest outside of the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show. PETA protests the dog show each year and this year they positioned two PETA members outside Madison Square Garden dressed in Ku Klux Klan uniforms.

"Crowds gawked at a table set up outside Madison Square Garden on Monday afternoon, where People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals was protesting the start of the Westminster Kennel Club show. PETA contends that the American Kennel Club promotes pure breeding of dogs that is harmful to their health.

"'Welcome AKC Members,' reads a banner hanging from the table with AKC crossed out and KKK written above it. Two PETA protesters dressed as Ku KluxKlan members, while other volunteers handed out brochures that read: 'The KKK and the AKC: BFF?'"

"Obviously it's an uncomfortable comparison," PETA spokesman Michael McGraw said. But the AKC is trying to create a "master race", he added."It's a very apt comparison."

The group passed out brochures conveying that the Klan and AKC both strive for "pure bloodlines".

It amazes me that these PETA members were comfortable sporting KKK uniforms. Sometimes it seems like PETA is a cult itself.

In the past I have posted information on PETA and how the organization often promotes their ideals through exploiting women. Here they have the audacity to compare breeding dogs and the evils of racism.

Obviously PETA wants attention to their cause and I think they are quite proud of their tactics. It's amazing that anyone would contribute to this organization as they are socially insensitive and irresponsible.

Forget tie dye shirts! Tie dye cupcakes are so much cooler!

Amazing Tie Dye Cupcakes!!! Peace man!

Magic Marker

Magic Marker©
5/16/09
By Lady J

A magic marker in my pocket
An urge in my hand
I want to draw a big yellow moon
I want to draw a big brass band
I want to draw what I think noises look like
I want to draw a secret doorway
I want to watch it all come to life and with an exhale it will all go away

If you pretty please come play I'll be your best friend
I'll make you draw with your left and I'll try to draw with my right hand

You'll draw a scenic underwater world with fish that breath air
Where everything is wild
Where everything is fair

We won't have to draw love
Cuz it's not something you can see
But at some point we'll be sure it's you
and we'll be sure it's me

A magic marker in my pocket
and an urge in my hand
I want to draw a big yellow moon
I want to draw a big brass band
