National Iced Tea Day

(source)

Why is there a National Iced Tea Day? I have no freakin' clue. It's random and I love tea so why not celebrate it?

According to the website Holiday In Sights, In 1904 marks the birth of iced tea. English tea plantation owner Richard Blechynden set up a booth to sell hot tea at the St. Louis World Fair. It was a hot day and he poured some of his hot tea into ice and served it cold. It was an immediate hit. Many believe that this was the first known use of iced tea.

According to Daily TWiP, this 1904 was not indeed the first known use of iced tea. In the U.S. and England cold teas date back to the early 1800s in the form of punches made from green tea and alcohol. As ice became less expensive and refrigeration was introduced into homes, iced tea became increasingly popular. Sweet tea had been brewed in the south since 1879, when the first known recipe for sweet tea was published in a community cookbook in Virginia.

Happy National Iced Tea Day!
