Hugo Schwyzer Speaks at Slutwalk Los Angeles 2011

On June 4th SlutWalk Los Angeles 2011 took place at West Hollywood Park in West Hollywood. The march was another addition to the SlutWalks that have been taking place in various cities. The original Slut Walk took place on April 3rd of this year in Toronto. To read my post on that event click here.

For those of you who haven't read my previous posts on the event here is some background information. On January 24th, 2011, a representative of the Toronto Police gave a speech in which he stated: “women should avoid dressing like sluts in order not to be victimized”.

Slutwalk is a response to the outrageous statement uttered by that officer and the common belief that if a woman is sexually assaulted it is her own damn fault.

SlutWalk began in Toronto but has spread internationally.

Hugo Schwyzer Speaks at SlutWalk Los Angeles 2011

Hugo Schwyzer is a feminist, a gender studies teacher, an activist, an author, a Christian, a father and husband (of course an individual cannot be summed up in simple labels). I've come to know him mildly through his blog site and his facebook page. He's a kind hearted man and a damn good activist.

Here he speaks about the myth of male weakness. The myth of male weakness is the belief that men just can't help themselves. What an insult to the gender that is male. Men and women alike often support this myth. Ever hear the phrase, "boys will be boys?"

Hugo asks the audience to repeat with him, "Men are not weak." The audience chants it with him and then a single man from the audience shouts, "I am not weak!" It brought a tear to my eye. How beautiful.
