In 2003 the Massachusetts Mental Health Center (MMHC) finally closed. The facility had been running for 91 years. Before its official closing, artist Anna Schuleit created an installation entitled, "BLOOM," Schuleit filled the MMHC's four floors with 28,000 flowers. The concept of this project was meant to address the lack of flowers in psychiatric hospitals. The basement floor was covered with sod so that visitors could walk through and look at the installation.
As a woman who has worked as a psychiatric social worker/therapist in a psych hospital or three, I can tell you that there certainly is a lack of flowers. To be honest I think in a setting such as a psych hospital, a few flowers don't make that much of a statement. To bring delight I think more is better. "More" may not equate to an installation piece but more is more.
