“Well, you just feel like you’re being raped somehow. Raped…It feels like a kind of weird — just weird, man.”
~Johnny Depp
In a recent Vanity Fair interview, Depp explained how he felt photo shoots to be particularly invasive. His statement is non-sensical being that he willingly participates in photo shoots. Depp has the choice to avoid photo shoots if he wishes and is not forced to endure them.
When I found out about the above quote I knew that Depp would be releasing some sort of apology in an attempt at damage control.
I simply Googled, "Johnny Depp Rape" and up popped various news articles on the subject.
The below comments were issued in the Huffinton Post.
"I am truly sorry for offending anyone in any way. I never meant to. It was a poor choice of words on my part in an effort to explain a feeling," Depp said in the statement. "I understand there is no comparison and I am very regretful. In an effort to correct my lack of judgment, please accept my heartfelt apology."
I certainly believe that an individual can notice the error of their ways once that error is brought to their attention. Even so, I can't help but wonder if Depp is apologizing simply to buck the press off his back. I will give Depp the benefit of the doubt and say that he is not an ill willed person. My concern is that when he spoke, it wasn't even within his consciousness that his statement was not only inaccurate but perhaps reflective of his place of privilege as a male.
I think most women would not make such a statement as it is women who are more often the victims of rape.
