I have just learned that there are several "Killing Your Hooker So You Don't Have To Pay Her" groups and fan pages on facebook.
The original page was created by a Catholic school student at St Laurence's College in Queensland. The page has been removed by Facebook but not before almost 18,000 people joined the site.
Now it seems that several others are attempting to build up pages again. One page states that it is a GTA4 (Grand Theft Auto - video game) reference and is not meant to be taken literally. I find that this makes little difference.
The original page which was created approximately one month ago boasts such updates as, “Ever stab your hooker with a blunt object to add insult to injury?”
Hypothetical violence is not funny in my view. Abuse and murder of sex workers is actually quite common. Even though I do not support prostitutes of any kind (i.e. porn actors, strippers) I do support their emotional and physical health and safety.
I do not take the idea of killing a woman, using her up, and dominating her as a joke. But now we can place these notions in a hypothetical arena and suddenly it's acceptable. How are we as a society comfortable with this?
