I’ma disrobe you, than I’mma probe you
See I abducted you, so I tell ya what to do
I tell ya what to do, what to do, what to do
See I abducted you, so I tell ya what to do
I tell ya what to do, what to do, what to do
E.T. by Katy Perry featuring Kanye West
Dominance in music. It's widespread and pop licks it up and then devours it whole. The above lyrics are song by Kanye West.
"I abducted you so I tell ya what to do." This sounds like rape and I imagine that the majority fan base of young girls don't notice. I can only assume that the lyrics written were not intended to suggest rape however, the message does suggest dominance vs. submissiveness within the context of sex.
Other choice lines such as, "I’m tryna Bath my Ape in your Milky Way" and "They calling me an alien. A big headed astronaut. Maybe it’s because your boy Yeezy get ass a lot" are further examples of egotism and dominance.
If I were a female music artist I wouldn't want these words connected to my name, connected to my art. It breaks my heart that sexism is so mainstream. This isn't a new issue by any means but it continues to popularize. Music will continue to present itself in this way.
Men (and women) who sing these lyrics may sing them with earnest and feel powerful doing so. Pop music is often made with an agenda. All too often pop (and other forms) are structured and marketed so that others will feel empowered when they sing the songs in cars, in their living rooms or at concerts.
There are some of us who recognize this. My advice is to spring up conversations with the people around you. Let's find out why lyrics such as these are such a draw.
