In July I put up a post entitled "Worst Lyrics I've Heard This Year" in which I describe two songs that have extremely offensive lyrics that rendered me stunned. The songs were called "Don't Trust Me" by 3oh!3 and "Best I Ever Had" by Drake. These are two artist that I was unfamiliar with in the past and unfortunately I was exposed to their misogyny. I was so surprised that they have a female audience that accepts such offense. The fact that women have been participating in patriarchy this way is not new however as years go by it seems that lyrics increase in their vulgarity and yet women are still bopping their heads and singing along.
Today I was exposed to another sick little diddy that had me gasping. The song is entitled "Pregnant" and is by R. Kelly. While it may seem counterproductive to post the lyrics and a photo of R. Kelly, my hope is that those who may enjoy songs like these may gain some understanding to how these lyrics only grandiosely glorify men and shame women.
Pregnant
[Chorus]
Girl you make me wanna get pregnant
Girl you make me wanna get you pregnant
Lay your body down and get you pregnant
Knock you up, pregnant, knock you up
I would assume that at first listen/read these lyrics would horrify anyone who came across them. Why on earth would any man want to impregnate someone whom I can only assume they are aquainted with casually?
Now usually I leave the club with a girl who has a man
And take her to the hotel for just a one night stand
See I'm a playa so I ain't tryna take her on no dates
Of course he has to mention that he's usually with a girl that has a partner because in his mind this glorifies him. It seems like many singers think that by simply stating that they are a type of persona in a song it suddenly makes them as great as they want to be viewed. And why is being a player something to brag about? Collecting women makes him great how? Hasn't it been proven over and over that just because a man is able to get a lot of women to sleep with him, that doesn't mean that the man is truly of quality? Who wants a guy who doesn't know how to be in a real relationship?
But much like my patron man I'm just tryna take it straight
Until I met this girl in the club with an unbelievably booty
So, he's dropping labels now. He mentions patron because it's a high priced alcohol. Again, this is supposed to give him stature of some kind. Also, it still amazes me that "booty" is a word that is taken seriously in music. It's so ridiculous!
Sweetest girl in the world and I mean it and on top of that she's a cutie
I ain't seen nothing like her around here in a while
And if I had a girl she'd be the one to bear my child
Telling myself I'm a playa so I keep tryna shake it off
But I keep on seeing this big old house with a picket fence and a dog
Never felt nothing like this
She's more than a mistress enough to handle my business
Now put that girl in my kitchen
Put her in the kitchen? As in barefoot and pregnant I presume. What woman is aspiring to be a 50s wife?
And why is it that when you add some snaps to a song and a slow beat that a song suddenly is labeled "R&B"?
Back to Chorus:
Then model/actor Tyrese gets in on the fun and sings the next bit.
Tyrese:
Now all the pretty ladies please line up right next to me
How would you like to go on a little trip with your boy Tyrese
Raise your hand if you want me to fulfill your fantasy
I can have you co-starring and in one of my movies
Tell me what your name is
Ican make you famous
Does this not seem absurd to anyone other than me? He's certainly got some ego on him. Oh please please Tyrese can I pretty please be in one of your movies? There is nothing smooth about this.
We can pop champagne and get right down to sexing
Now I ain't got nothing to do tonight I gotta wait for my crew
Cuz apparently an entourage makes a R. Kelly more appealing and manly?
I just wanna put some in you
And i can tell that you want it too
And I'm ready baby
And you're ready babe
So come on ladies let's get up out of this club
Kel's, dream and Ryse after party
You can fuck with us
Why is it that in these songs women are always ready and willing? As if any woman would be ready and willing. As if that is what a woman's job is.
And I gotta say...I am so tired of the fact that so many mainstream rap, hip hop and r&b songs mention clubs constantly! Is there nothing else?
Chorus:
R&B singer Robin Thicke then takes over
Robin Thicke:
Oooh ooh this song has got me hungry baby baby
So tell me that you want me baby baby
And girl I'll love you until the sun shines
And girl I promise that I will make you my baby
Around the world in and out of clubs
Hanging with chicks and I don't see nothing wrong
with having a kid
Ooh ooh sounds like heaven's calling us
Ooh ooh and girl let's make this about making love
If you choose me I guarantee that the rest of your life would be man drama free
I think both of us should leave this club and get somewher ealone with me where
there is no phones to ring and plan this magic seed
Um, does anyone else see something strange about a man who wants to go directly from the club and then have a baby? Doesn't this sound more like a man wanting to mark his territory with semen?
Chorus:
The Dream:
You house my house don't matter beat it up
Your city my city beat it up something about being with you makes me wanna baby
Put those pils on chill
"Put those pills on chill" ?!?!? I'm trying to imagine R. Kelly in the studio mixing this track. How on earth did they take these lyrics seriously and think yeah this sounds great? This song sounds like a joke.
And girl give me my baby you cna play all you want
But I know you feel it too for three weeks you been talking about extra bedrooms in New York meeting with the realtor
There something you wanna tell me just say it I'll pay it
Oh girl I'm a take care of you and I'm a still hold you like we brand new so don't get it twisted for 30 something weeks I'm still gon hit it
Ok, let me get this straight. Weren't we in a club a little while ago? And now suddenly the story brings us to a place further in the relationship where the woman has been planning for a child for three weeks. R. Kelly in company seem to feel that this is wonderful as long as the chick knows that she's still going to be giving him sex.
Chorus:
R. Kelly
Take you out to eat uh uh
Wine and dun uh uh
Shopping spree uh uh
You sexing me uh huh
So, he is in love with this woman but he's not going to give her anything but (not that I think women should expect gifts) but this woman needs to know her place apparently.
See I'm not cheap or selfish babe
Girl I'm just there for that booty babe and it's all your fault baby you look so good
It's all your fault then it feels like wood and you look so bored
Up in this club so let's go and we can hop in the laborghini
Roll to my bighome shorty let's go crazy let's make a lil' kelly
Baby I got goodies and I want you to have some
I ask that you let me explore your secret garden
Chorus:
Wasn't R. Kelly just stating how crazy he was about this woman and now he's back to just wanting it to be all about sex.
"Explore your secret garden"? Who wrote these lyrics? And who approved them for market?
This song frightens me, R. Kelly frightens me and I am frightened by the thought that more songs like these are most likely yet to come. What has happened to the music industry?
