The Occupy Wall Street Bat Signal

If you've been following, admiring, or participating in the Occupy Wall Street Movement, you'll want to see this. It made me feel very emotional. Such a feeling of unity.

On November 17th, a team of creative people used video projection to cast a Bat Signal of sorts, along side of a Verizon building across from the Brooklyn Bridge.

An added bonus for me is that the video is set to the music of Godspeed You Black Emperor. It doesn't hurt that such a moving project involved one of my favorite musical groups.

So, here's how it came to be.  Matt Read organized the project. In order to set the projector in place he went to subsidized housing near the Verizon building and put up some fliers offering to pay to rent an apartment for a few hours. A single mother of three named Denise Vega responded to the ad. When Read explained why he needed the space she became interested in the project and insisted that the occupiers not pay her.

While the lights were up, the NYPD was looking for the source of the projector.

"If they want to come up they're gonna need a warrant!,"Vega's family was saying. "If they ask us, well, we don't know what they are talking about!

Here's what it said:
  • First there was a 99% symbol.
  • Then "Mic Check!" flashed 3x
  • "Look around, you are a part of a global uprising."
  • "We are a cry from the heart of the world."
  • "We are unstoppable, another world is possible."
  • "Happy Birthday #Occupy Movement"
  • Then the Occupation cities flashed across the building faster and faster.
  • "We are winning."
  • "It is the beginning of the beginning."
  • "Do not be afraid."
  • "LOVE!"
