American Pimping

Anyone ever see the documentary American Pimp? The film documents mostly African American pimps (with the exception of two Caucasian pimps) who speak of their gains, losses, past and current lifestyle.

What I realized in watching the film is that pimping has similarities to slavery. The sex industry is an area in which slavery can still exist. For many pimps (male or female) it isn't just about the money and drugs but it is about power. Owning these women and being able to have sex with them whenever they want is much like owning a slave.

There is a lot of pride that seems to go into being pimp. What makes a person want control to such extremes? Is it that they feel they have no control of their own lives so they want it over others? I don't know.

What strikes me is that many African American pimps are extremely comfortable pimping women of their own race. Are these men (or women) forgetting the history of slavery? Have they neglected to recognize the current struggle of racism and profiling that exists today? The struggle that causes so many to feel inslaved? Pimps are willing to use psychological manipulation, control and promise love, shelter, food, protection and luxuries as compensation for a woman's willingness to exploit and submit herself.

Street pimping isn't the only are in which there is a comparison to slavery. The porn industry is another area of prostitution. One in which women of various cultures are viewed as a sexual stereotype. Yes, pornography does this with all women. However, women of color are promoted in such a way that their race is an added inticement.

I recently read a book of essays that speaks to the harms of pornography. Below are excerpts that speak to concept of exploiting women of color.

We don't have to look only to pornographic videos and magazines to see modern day prostitution, pornography and pimping. We can just turn on the tv. MTV and VH1 are prime examples.

In our pop culture/media today, many use the word "pimp" as a word that equates to "cool". Using women up seems to be "cool" as well. Videos of willing women (but we know that there is a vast amount of reasons as to why women are supposedly willing) bending over in G-strings, sucking on popsicles and glorifying men and their egos.
