Leave Him Alone: How Marketing Companies Are Still Disrespecting The King of Pop

I'm not going to get into the scandals that have surrounded Michael Jackson for years. Rather, I'd like to touch on the marketing circus that has continued to flourish since his death.

A short time after Michael's death I was in a Barnes and Noble book store and saw display after display dedicated to Michael Jackson. His music, his dvds and books written about him were on sale. His music was being played over the store's sound system and his music videos played in the music and dvd area.

It is not uncommon for people to purchase merchandise of a particular artist once he or she has passed on. I remember when Johnny Cash died and everyone was flooding into the record stores to buy his albums.

My issue is that marketing companies have no problem promoting his merchandise in order to profit off of the frenzy that has accompanied the news of his death. If folks want to purchase his music, let them do so on their own. But to view his death as an opportunity to promote sales is to go forth without a conscience. Why can't we just finally leave him alone?
