Taylor Mali

Taylor Mali is quite impressive. A slam poet who's education includes drama studies in Oxford with members of The Royal Shakespeare Company. When you listen to him speak it doesn't surprise you that he has this kind of background.

Mali is a former teacher and has taught academic subjects such as history, english, math and S.A.T preparation. Many (thought not all) of Mali's poems have to do with the subject of teaching. He speaks of its rewards and challenges. I often like to share Mali's work with friends of mine who are in the teaching profession.

He has performed and lectured for teachers all over the world and has created a New Teacher Project in which the goal is to create 1,000 new teachers through "poetry, persuasion, and perseverance."

In addition he is the author two books of poetry and four CDs of spoken word. He received a New York Foundation for the Arts Grant in 2001 to develop a one man show entitled Teacher! Teacher! It is a show about poetry, teaching, and math which won the jury prize for best solo performance at the 2001 Comedy Arts Festival.

Mali was formerly president of the non-profit organization Poetry Slam Inc which oversees all poetry slams in North America.

Currently Mali makes his living entirely as a spoken word, voiceover artist and narrator. He travels across the U.S. performing and teaching workshops. Quite impressive Mr. Mali.
