Squeaky released from prison today

Lynette "Squeaky" Fromme was released from Fort Worth's Federal Medical Center Carswell this morning.

To be honest I'm disappointed as I have a feeling Fromme is still a follower of Manson. While I cannot confirm this I feel that there are other Manson followers that are more deserving of release. I say this as Fromme has followed Manson even when other former followers have been able to see Manson for what he was/is. However, there is something to be debated. Fromme did not murder anyone as the other imprisoned followers did. So, is she more or less guilty if she is still devoted to Manson?

According to Associate Press she has refused interview requests, and prison officials would not say where she planned to live or what she planned to do after more than 30 years behind bars.

Squeaky was imprisoned for pointing a semiautomatic .45- caliber pistol at President Ford in 1975. The 26 year old Manson follower received a life term and became the first person sentenced under a special federal law covering assaults on U.S. presidents. It is a statute enacted after the 1963 assassination of President John F. Kennedy.

According to CNN she said she knew Ford was in town and near her, "and I said, 'I gotta go and talk to him,' and then I thought, 'That's foolish. He's not going to stop and talk to you.' People have already shown you can lay blood in front of them and they're not, you know, they don't think anything of it. I said, 'Maybe I'll take the gun,' and I thought, 'I have to do this. This is the time.' "

Fromme has said that it never occurred to her that she might be sent to prison. Fromme has said that she feels her incarceration is unnecessary but she has no regrets when it comes to what she did. Fromme said, "No. No, I don't. I feel it was fate."

Ford died in 2006 at ge 93. The Gerald R. Ford Presidential Foundation has not yet commented on Fromme's release.

Fromme was sentenced to life in prison and parole was an option at the time. It is reported that the federal system later abolished her right to parole. Inmates however, receive "good time" -- for every year and one day they serve and 54 days are taken off their sentence.

Fromme first became eligible for parole in 1985 but Fromme had denied her right to her parole hearings for years. According to CNN the Beareau of Prisons would not say whether she changed her mind and requested a hearing.

Fromme was in July 2008 but was not released as she had accrrued extra time to her sentence for an escape from the West Virginia prison in 1987. She was found two days later, only a few miles from the prison. Fromme is reported to have stated that she escaped to be near Manson.

FMC-Carswell spokeswoman Maria Douglas would not comment on Fromme's behavior in prison in recent years. It is not known if Fromme is still a follower of Manson. To be honest, it wouldn't surprise me if she still holds a torch for him. Other former Manson followers have made great efforts to rehabilitate but Fromme's last interview in 2005 revealed her on going devotion.

Susan Atkins 2001

Susan Atkins is California's longest serving female inmate. She has a spotless prison record.
Atkins is now 60 and is dying of brain cancer and is mostly paralyzed. A parole board hearing is expected in September on her request for compassionate release.

Leslie Van Houten

Van Houten here at a 2002 parole hearing. She was convicted in the murders of the LaBiancas couple. The LaBiancas were murdered the night after actress Sharon Tate. Van Houten has a clean prison record and is a mentor in a college program for inmates. Her next opportunity at parole will probably be in 2010. Like Atkins, Van Houten is a woman of Christian faith and has accomplished a lot in prison. Some of these accomplishments include working with various 12-step and behaviorial programs, running bible meetings within the prison and working with women who enter prison due to poor life choices.

Director John Waters has developed a friendship with Van Houten over the years and has been advocating her release.

Charles "Tex" Watson

Watson was imprisoned for stabbing four people, including Sharon Tate. Additionally, Watson and fatally shot two other people. In 1975 he converted to Christianity and in 1983 he was ordained as a minister. Watson has also founded a website for a prison outreach program. Watson is now 63 years old and to date has been denied parole 13 times. His next hearing is set for November 2011.

Charles Manson

Charles Manson has been denied parole 11 times and it has gotten to the point where he doesn't even attend his own hearings. His next hearing is scheduled for 2012.

I am curious as to what Fromme will do with her new life. She has been imprisoned for 34 years and no doubt the world is much changed since she was out and free.

  1. My opinion based on reading available info on the internet. Charles Manson should never be released from prison. I would not advocate his early release, but I would also not be horrified if Charles "Tex" Watson were to be released in 2011, as I feel that the younger Tex was Manson's tool and not his disciple. I believe Manson knew very well how to manipulate people, especially whilst under the influence of drugs and alcohol.

  2. When people truly reform I believe they deserve a second chance.

  3. Anonymous,
You're probably right. Most likely others will want revenge.

  4. Charles "Tex" Watson is almost certainly an anti-social personality disorder. That is how he has been able to manipulate and charm others into believing his role was one of follower and that he has truly reformed under the guise of Christianity. The Christianity is most likely a diversion of his energies while in prison and perhaps even a card to play for his hopeful exodus from prison at some point. But make no mistake, he is almost certainly anti-social and that is a trait that does not reform. It just gets buried under the veneer of charm. He knew well what he was doing, he enjoyed it, and his "remorse" rings wholly hollow. That, my dear Lady J, is exactly why Watson should not be paroled and that is exactly why others would seek revenge. They aren't so easily duped.

  5. Oh, and I recognize that you are a psychiatric social worker, Lady J. I, too, am a healthcare professional...a physician with a wife that is an MSW/LCSW and does exclusive private counseling for all manner of illness ranging from kids with autism spectrum d/o to family counseling to borderline and anti-social PDO. So, not just spouting nonsense. Watson's track record smacks of anti-social PDO and/or some element of narcissistic PDO (given there is a good deal of crossover) right down to the superficial charm. Reformed? Hardly.

  6. -Steve P,
Thanks for stopping by and thank you for your feedback.

From the outside looking in it is quite possible that Watson has a personality disorder. I obviously do not know him personally and I do not know enough about him to know if he actually has an anti-social personality.

My opinion is not so much about whether Watson has truly reformed or hasn't. I simply believe that IF someone has truly reformed they then deserve another crack at life. I strongly believe in second chances and I believe that people can change.

As far as seeking revenge I am not for it. I think revenge is a waste of time and energy and I believe it taints the heart.

Your wife works within a large spectrum. Very impressive. I'm sure she has taught you a thing or two about personality disorders. I agree that personality disorders are hard to fight.

Thanks again for your feedback Steve P!

  8. Tex needs to stay put in prison with the rest of the clan or be put to death.

At least we can give him a choice. ?

    RIGHT ???

  9. I think if Tex Watson is freed and is a true reformed believer, his actions will speak loud and clear. Paul in the Bible was a murderer of Christians by the thousands until one day he had a change of heart. Read the story. I do feel that none of them should be allowed parole for their crimes. There are consequences for such heinous actions and eventhough Tex is supposedly reformed now, he needs to do the time for his crimes. Life without parole. Letting Fromme out is just scary. She tried to kill President Ford and later on to the Manson farm where she became in my opinion permanently degranged. The drugs and Mansons manipulation made a permanent dent in her.

  10. Thanks for the feedback. I've certainly thought about whether a member of "The Family" should be released or remain in prison. I wouldn't feel uncomfortable if Watson was released. You said that he needs to pay for his crime, but how much time is enough? You and I agree in that we believe people can indeed reform. If Paul was imprisoned should he have been held for life?

As far as Fromme. My understanding is that she didn't intend to kill Ford but rather wanted to get his attention and had no intention to kill. Fromme has been out and free for quite some time and we haven't heard about her. I have no idea where she is and what she's doing. I'm curious about that. It's unfortunate that she was released as she continues to adore Manson.

  11. Charles Tex Watson MUST die in jail. He had no pity for innocents and killed them brutally... All the pain he and the other members of the Manson family caused to the victims and to all the parents and relatives...He is enough lucky to still taste life and IF THERE WERE a GOD should NEVER forgive killers...

  12. Dear Anonymous,

I do not blame you for having strong feelings however, it is evident that we differ in our opinion. Watson did indeed cause incredible pain to all.

I do believe that God exists and God is more forgiving than any of us ever will be. When we have difficulty forgiving, he can do it with ease.

I believe that people can change. It doesn't happen over night, that's for sure.
