The Perfect Vagina - Documentary

I think many of us are familiar with the surgery labiaplasty. It is the surgery that modifies the vagina to look like more youthful. I first heard of women in the porn industry doing this. I thought it was so bizarre and so sad. I never once felt that I needed to alter the apperance of my labias. Additionally, this strikes me as a surgery that could potentially affect a woman's vaginal sensitivity.

This documentary takes place in the UK. I must admit I love hearing the narrator, Lisa Rogers use words like "bits", "twinkies" and "fanny". I perfer to call a vagina..a vagina. But it is interesting to observe different cultures and the language that others prefer to use.

Rogers accomplishes a lot throughout the film. In the beginning she actually accompanies a young woman who decides to get the surgery. Fair warning, the actually surgery is shown.

She also decides to speak to male individuals about women who want the surgery. Some think it is a ridiculous notion while others think it's not a bad idea.

Rogers also speaks to surgeons who perform the surgeries, women who are ashamed of their vaginas and women who are proud.

One of the most remarkable parts of the film was when Rogers visited sculptor Jamie McCartney who makes casts of women's vaginas and has created a Vagina Wall. It's quite interesting and quite beautiful.

Rogers also discovers that there is a procedure where women undergo a surgery that repairs or restores one's hymen. Rogers speaks to Muslim women who speak about how Muslim men expect women they encounter sexually to be virgins. Many Muslim women who are not virgins decide to have the surgery.

Rogers also meets up with Holistic Sexual Educator Rachel Foux who runs the Household Companion Project that assists women in getting to accept their vaginas through a process of actually looking at it and talking about it.

It seems that our young folk don't have much of a chance to really get to know and appreciate their natural selves. More and more women feel that they have to alter their bodies and more and more men want and expect women to look like women in pornographic videos and other forms of media.
