I came across a website called StickerSisters.com. The website sells stickers and other products that come with empowering statements about women or in defense of women. I found some items that I liked and some I did not.
This particular sticker is meant to be pasted on products that are discriminating and exploitative.
Here is an example of the sticker being used. I of course agree with the message of the sticker but feel at odds as to whether or not pasting stickers such as this is a productive form of activism. On the one hand I think it would be a great form of release to put a sticker like this on some offensive image. However, I cannot completely predict the reactions it might receive from others. I do not think a sticker like this will change the mind of those who feel that pornography is healthy and good. Can a sticker really reach the pit of consciousness within a sexist man or woman? What do you think?
As I mentioned earlier Sticker Sisters sell more than just stickers..
This is a cute shirt for little tykes. Very cute but of course a shirt like this is more so meant for the guardians of the child to appreciate rather than the child him/herself. I always find it somewhat amusing when I see baby or child shirts with sentiments that can only be conceptualized by an older person.
The image of this shirt is not large enough and therefore tough to read. The cartoon depicts an alternative to typical fairy princess tales. Here the princess is not the damsal in distress but rather quite independent and capable.
Here is a poster called I Fight Like A Girl
As I mentioned earlier there are some items that I am not completely on board with. The site also features magnets, shoelaces and other items that say things like "Girls Rock!" and "Girl Power!". It just seems a bit too much like pop feminism to me. While there is nothing wrong with being proud or empowered I much rather hear remarks that have some substance and "Girl Power!" sounds empty to me. Very reminiscent of the Spice Girls.
Girls are awesome, boys are awesome. Women are awesome and men are awesome. However, let us say WHY and HOW and lead to a purpose of change rather than a cheerleader chant.
